On August 24th, 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted with such force that it completely destroyed the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae within two days. Pliny the Younger, who was living with his uncle in the nearby city of Misenum, witnessed the disaster first-hand. In letters to his friend Cornelius Tacitus (discovered during the 16th century), Pliny wrote about the falling ashes and pumice stones.
